Institute of Tropical Medicine
Idzi Potters, B.S., MLT, holds a professional degree in (bio)chemistry and in biomedical laboratory technology, as well as a certificate of specialization in helminthology and protozoology. He draws on over 25 years of experience in a reference laboratory, working as a laboratory technician in the Department of Clinical Sciences, at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium.
For decades, he has been actively involved in the diagnosis of intestinal parasites, tissue parasites, blood parasites and ectoparasites. Passionate about teaching, he has trained other professionals in parasitology in ITM’s postgraduate and master’s courses, and he teaches medical students at the University of Antwerp, Belgium.
Potters has experience with international capacity exchange, including setting up a schistosomiasis diagnostic laboratory in Richard-Toll, Senegal, and providing in-depth training on malaria diagnosis in Kisantu, DRC, with a focus on knowledge transfer to peers (“training the trainers”).
He has organized, chaired and spoken at various parasitology workshops and conferences, and has given several interviews for Belgian national television, radio and newspapers. He collaborated on developing the second edition of the “WHO Bench Aids for the Diagnosis of Intestinal Parasites,” and is the lead author of the chapter "Reagents, Stains and Media: Parasitology" in the Manual of Clinical Microbiology—13th Edition (黑料正能量Press). He has published several scientific articles on unusual cases in highly ranked journals, often as first author. He serves as a reviewer for several journals and recently became an Editorial Board Member for ASM’s Journal of Clinical Microbiology.
