The Power of SMART: Transforming Your Vision Into Action (2-Part Series)

This 2-part series helps participants turn their vision into action through goal setting and strategic planning. In Part 1, participants will explore the SMART goal framework and learn to transform broad ideas into clear, purpose-driven goals that support their academic, research and professional growth.
 
In Part 2, we will turn their SMART goals into a personalized roadmap for success—an Individual Development Plan (IDP). Participants will learn key components of an effective plan and practice strategies to engage in meaningful IDP conversations with mentors and supervisors to foster accountability and long-term success.

Working SMARTer: Goal-Setting That Gets Results | May 20, 2025, 1-2 p.m. ET
When you are in a training position it is important to set aside time for planning and goal setting with mentors and colleagues. These goals can be specific to your research progress and/or your career professional development. In this presentation we will define the SMART goal framework and explain the meaning of each component. We will apply the SMART framework to transform a general goal into a clear, actionable SMART goal for research or professional development. 

Learning Goals:
  • Recognize the importance of intentional goal setting during training to support both research and career development.
  • Understand the SMART framework and what makes a goal Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.
  • Practice converting broad goals into focused, actionable SMART goals that align with your research or professional growth.

From Now to Next: Creating Your Individual Development Plan | June 24, 2025, 1-2 p.m. ET
In part 2 of this series, we will utilize the SMART goals set in the previous presentation to create an individual development plan. We will discuss the purpose and components of an individual development plan and how it supports personal and professional growth. We will draft a personalized Individual development plan (IDP) that incorporates SMART goals, targeted skill development and realistic timelines. Finally, we will discuss the best way to conduct an IDP meeting with your mentor or supervisor to ensure accountability and goal achievement.  

Learning Goals:
  • Describe the key elements of an effective Individual Development Plan (IDP) and its role in long-term career development.
  • Translate previously defined SMART goals into a structured and actionable IDP.
  • Identify specific skills, resources and milestones to include in your development plan.
  • Practice strategies for preparing and leading a productive IDP conversation with a mentor or supervisor.

Format:

  • Live webinar, 60-minute expert discussion.
  • The speaker will participate in a 45-minute discussion/presentation. Thereafter, the attendees will participate in a 15-minute Q&A with the speaker. 
  • For session 1: Attendees will receive a link to the recording and an invitation to participate in a live follow-up workshop for a deeper dive into building effective goals and impactful feedback strategies on Tuesday, May 27, from 1-2 p.m ET.

Eligibility

All participants must be an undergraduate student, graduate student or postdoctoral scientist in the microbial sciences.
