This meeting fosters a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach to understanding infectious diseases, innovating diagnostics and treatment and strengthening global health resilience.

2027 Key Focus Areas

Diagnostics & Laboratory Systems Across Care Settings: this topic focuses on diagnostic microbiology and laboratory systems that improve the speed, accuracy, accessibility and impact of infectious disease detection across clinical, public health and decentralized care settings. It explores innovative molecular diagnostics (e.g., pathogen-agnostic), automation, bioinformatics, AI-enabled interpretation, diagnostic stewardship, decentralized or point-of-care testing, equitable access, regulatory and reimbursement considerations, and the integration of laboratory data into clinical and public health decision-making. It features innovations that strengthen the connection between testing, patient care, surveillance and timely public health response.

Microbiome & Ecosystem-Based Interventions for Health: this topic examines the role of microbiomes and ecological systems in advancing health across humans and animals. It addresses microbiome-based diagnostics, therapeutics and prevention strategies; engineered microbiomes or microbial consortia; ecological interventions; immune modulation and antimicrobial resistance. It focuses on how microbiome science and ecosystem-based approaches can be translated into practical interventions that improve health outcomes and strengthen resilience across interconnected biological systems.

MultiOmics, Host Response & Precision Infection Medicine: this topic focuses on the integration of genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, bioinformatics, microbiome data and host-response profiling to improve infectious disease detection, characterization and management. It explores host–pathogen interactions, data integration, AI-enabled interpretation, precision public health, risk stratification, clinical decision support, antimicrobial stewardship and translation of multiomic insights into clinical or surveillance applications. It highlights approaches that connect complex biological data to actionable decisions for patients, health systems and public health response.

Pandemic Preparedness, Surveillance & Response—One Health: this topic explores integrated approaches to preventing, detecting and responding to infectious disease threats across human, animal and environmental systems. It addresses multisectoral genomic surveillance; One Health data systems; antimicrobial resistance tracking; outbreak intelligence; zoonoses; outbreak response, including infection prevention and control; vaccines and immunology; early warning tools and the use of AI to support faster public health action. It focuses on preparedness as a connected ecosystem, including sectors working together and utilizing diagnostics, vaccines, therapeutics, laboratory networks, surveillance platforms and response frameworks to strengthen readiness for emerging and re-emerging infectious disease threats.

Therapeutic Innovation for AMR and Emerging Infections: this topic advances discovery, development and implementation of therapeutic strategies to address antimicrobial resistance and emerging infectious disease threats. It highlights phage discovery and therapy, nontraditional antimicrobials, small-molecule approaches, AI-enabled therapeutics discovery, resistance prediction, broad-spectrum antivirals, host-targeted therapies and combination treatment strategies. It focuses on translational innovation, including mechanisms of action, susceptibility testing, manufacturing and quality control; clinical application, regulatory and reimbursement considerations; implementation pathways and scalable models that move promising therapies from discovery toward patient and population impact.

We encourage submissions aligned with our Phage Therapy Coordination Network, which is working to accelerate the development and integration of phage therapy through collaboration, evidence generation and stakeholder alignment across the field.

Scientific Foundations: explore foundational discoveries, emerging concepts, enabling technologies and innovative methods that advance microbiology, immunology, infectious diseases and therapeutic development. This topic welcomes basic, translational and interdisciplinary science, emphasizing new knowledge, tools, platforms and technologies with the potential to transform research, clinical care, public health and future innovation. Artificial intelligence, data science, implementation science, regulatory science and health equity are encouraged as cross-cutting themes across all topic areas.
